Explosion injures multiple workers at downtown Houston high-rise under construction

HOUSTON, TX – Several construction workers were injured following an apparent explosion at a high-rise building under construction in downtown Houston.

According to Brent Taylor, communications director for the Houston Fire Department, HFD units were dispatched at 11:08 a.m. to 1319 Texas Avenue for reports of a fire in a high-rise. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that an explosion had occurred on the upper floors of the vacant structure, which is currently being developed into a hotel.

Officials confirmed that the building was not occupied by guests or residents at the time. All individuals affected were construction workers or affiliated personnel. Several were injured and transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital. The injuries are mostly burn-related, though the exact extent has not yet been confirmed.

Hazmat teams responded as a precaution. Houston Fire Department inspectors and the Arson Bureau are on scene to determine the exact cause and origin of the explosion. Preliminary, unconfirmed reports suggest the incident may be related to a boiler.

The area surrounding the building has been cordoned off to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic for safety, and crews will remain on scene to assess structural conditions and ensure public safety. No secondary threats have been identified.

Taylor said it was fortunate that no pedestrians were in the immediate area at the time of the explosion, which could have resulted in more serious injuries. A full inspection and damage assessment is underway. The number of firefighters and responders on scene is estimated to be in the dozens.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
