AUSTIN, TX – Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to intensify enforcement efforts targeting vape and smoke shops that violate state laws and regulations, with a focus on protecting children from dangerous hemp-derived products.

“Texas will protect children from dangerous hemp products,” said Governor Abbott. “Today, I directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to increase surveillance and enforcement of any vape and smoke shop violating Texas law. Texas will prioritize protecting our children.”
Under the Governor’s directive:
- DPS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) will carry out targeted operations to identify problematic vape and smoke shops and coordinate with state, local, and federal partners to inspect these businesses.
- CID Special Agents will use inspection findings to launch undercover operations, identify unlawful activity, and initiate criminal investigations.
- The DPS Crime Lab will test seized products, and CID Special Agents will pursue charges against shop employees and owners who are in violation of Texas law.
- DPS will also work alongside federal and local law enforcement partners to further these investigations.
This action follows an executive order issued by Governor Abbott last month instructing the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and DPS to act immediately to safeguard children from harmful hemp-based products while upholding federal law and protecting the rights of responsible adults.
