AUSTIN, TX, October 17, 2025 — Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to mobilize additional state wildfire response resources as elevated fire danger continues across large portions of the state.

“Texas is taking swift action against potential wildfire threats across our state,” said Governor Abbott. “I strongly urge Texans to create an emergency plan, limit any activities that can cause a spark, and heed the guidance of local officials to keep yourself and your family safe.”
According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, drought conditions, high winds, and above-average temperatures have increased wildfire risks statewide, particularly across West Texas, the Panhandle, South Plains, Big Country, Texoma, Central, East, and Southeast Texas. The Wildland Fire Preparedness Level remains at Level 3, with more than 80 wildfires burning over 1,800 acres in the past week.
Under Governor Abbott’s direction, the following resources are being utilized to support local wildfire response operations:
- Texas A&M Forest Service (TIFMAS): Over 450 state, local, and out-of-state firefighters, more than 150 fire engines and bulldozers, and over 35 federally contracted aircraft.
- Texas Department of State Health Services: Emergency medical task forces and Wildland Fire Support Packages.
- Texas Department of Public Safety: Highway Patrol Troopers to assist motorists and patrol roadways.
- Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: Game Wardens and State Park Police assisting with wildfire operations.
- Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Animal Health Commission: Coordinating agricultural and livestock resource needs.
- Public Utility Commission of Texas, Railroad Commission of Texas, and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality: Monitoring power, gas, and environmental conditions.
State emergency officials are also monitoring potential severe weather across North and Northeast Texas this weekend, with risks including thunderstorms, large hail, strong winds, and flash flooding.
Texans are encouraged to stay informed, develop emergency plans, and follow local guidance. Wildfire safety and preparedness information is available at TexasReady.gov, tfsweb.tamu.edu, and tdem.texas.gov/prepare.
