Man charged with murder in Amarillo RV fire death

AMARILLO, TX – A 46-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with an RV fire that left one person dead, according to the Amarillo Police Department.

On October 27, 2025, at approximately 4:53 a.m., officers were dispatched to a trailer fire near NW 5th Avenue and Lamar Street. When they arrived, the RV was fully engulfed in flames. Officers secured the area and helped evacuate nearby homes until the fire was extinguished. Once firefighters entered the RV, they discovered a deceased person inside.

The victim was later identified as 46-year-old James Valdez Sosa. Following the completion of an autopsy and further investigation in collaboration with the Amarillo Fire Marshal’s Office, police charged 46-year-old Luis Anguel Rico with murder in connection with Sosa’s death. Rico has been booked into the Potter County Jail.

Witnesses reported seeing someone walking away from the trailer before noticing smoke and calling 911. The investigation remains ongoing.
