Man fatally shot by deputies at MetroRail platform after reported indecent exposure call, police say

HOUSTON, TX – A man was shot and killed by Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the Metro light rail platform in the 7800 block of Fulton Street around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Houston Police Department.

The identity of the man is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

According to HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, a female passenger alerted deputies working an extra job on the platform that a male suspect was exposing himself on the light rail cars. Deputies attempted to detain the man as he exited the train. Police say he refused to obey verbal commands and attempted to flee.

During the encounter, the suspect produced a knife and cut one of the deputies. Both deputies then discharged their weapons, striking the man. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The injured deputy was also taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

As required when any law enforcement officer discharges a weapon within Houston city limits, the incident is under investigation by the Houston Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit.

A witness who asked to remain anonymous said the man was a regular rider, had not caused issues in the past, and was with his girlfriend at the time. The witness added that the man did not appear to be in crisis. He shared approximately six minutes of video footage with us, shown below.

According to the witness, CPR was initiated by a female officer during his livestream that began after the above video clips ended.
