HOUSTON, TX – A 13-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by a 10-year-old boy during a large fight outside the Quail Creek Apartments in the 8000 block of Grow Lane on Wednesday evening around 8 p.m.
According to the Houston Police Department, Northwest Patrol officers responded to the scene and found the girl with at least one stab wound. She was transported to a hospital by the Houston Fire Department, where she was later pronounced deceased.
Police say the 10-year-old admitted to stabbing the girl and turned himself over to officers. He claimed the 13-year-old was among several individuals who arrived at the apartment and began assaulting people. He said he stabbed her in self-defense.
Homicide investigators are working to obtain surveillance footage and interview witnesses. Police believe a prior disturbance at school earlier in the day may have led to the confrontation. Witness accounts estimate 10 to 40 individuals were involved in the fight.
The 10-year-old lives at the apartment with his mother. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether charges will be filed, as the child meets the minimum age of criminal responsibility in Texas.
No other injuries have been reported.
