Suspects from AutoZone battery theft end up in fatal crash along Katy Freeway service road

HOUSTON, TX – A group of burglary suspects crashed after reportedly stealing car batteries from an AutoZone, leaving one dead and two hospitalized.

The incident began overnight at the AutoZone located at 1818 Gessner Road, where three suspects broke in and stole multiple car batteries. They fled in a maroon sedan and headed southbound on Witte before crashing into the wall along the Katy Freeway service road around 3:13 a.m.

All three men, believed to be in their 30s, were trapped in the vehicle. The driver was extricated by Houston Fire Department crews and pronounced deceased at the scene. The two passengers were transported to local hospitals in unknown condition.

Police confirmed this was not a pursuit. Officers were attempting to locate the suspect vehicle when they discovered the crash scene and found car batteries inside the wrecked sedan.
