Cyclist fatally struck during collision with SUV on West Airport

HOUSTON, TX – An adult female bicyclist was pronounced deceased after being struck by a vehicle near the 6100 block of West Airport, according to the Houston Police Department.

Investigators with HPD Vehicular Crimes said officers were called to the scene just after 9:30 p.m. for a crash involving a Mercedes SUV and a bicyclist. Police said the bicyclist was traveling southbound across the main lanes of West Airport when she was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound.

The driver remained at the scene and was described by investigators as an elderly man in his 70s. Police said there were no signs of impairment, and speed is not believed to be a factor at this stage of the investigation. Investigators also stated the driver does not have a known history of reckless driving.

According to police, the bicyclist was not crossing at an intersection and may not have been traveling in the correct direction of travel. Investigators said the bicycle did not appear to have lights or reflectors, and the area where the crash occurred was very dark. The Houston Fire Department pronounced the bicyclist deceased at the scene. The medical examiner was called to respond.

HPD said investigators are canvassing the area for surveillance video as the investigation continues.
