HOUSTON, TX – Fire crews responded to a working apartment fire around midnight on Collingsworth near Crosstimbers in northeast Houston after a chief returning from a previous fire noticed smoke and flames coming from the location and requested a box for a working fire.
The building is a four-unit apartment complex. Firefighters reported the far end unit was involved with fire and began checking the units to make sure everyone got out.
Crews located one female still inside one of the units. The first fire truck arrived about four minutes later and assisted in pulling her out. She was evaluated by EMS for extensive smoke inhalation before being transported to a hospital.
Firefighters also assisted one dog from the apartment. Crews used oxygen masks designed for dogs, and the dog appeared to be recovering.
Officials said there were reports that someone lives in the far unit and was there tonight, but they have not been able to account for that person. Multiple searches have been conducted. Due to collapse in that far unit, crews are waiting for smoke to clear before conducting a slow, methodical search to ensure no one else is inside.
No firefighters were injured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
