HOUSTON, TX – An elderly man was killed after being struck by two vehicles on the South Freeway mainlanes.
The crash occurred around 8:28 p.m. in the southbound lanes of U.S. 288 between Old Spanish Trail and Holly Hall.
Police said witnesses reported seeing the elderly man on the shoulder of the freeway before he entered the mainlanes. One vehicle struck him and continued driving. Investigators are treating that driver as involved in a hit-and-run, with a possible charge of failure to stop and render aid. No description of that vehicle was immediately available.
A second vehicle, described as a black Toyota Tundra, then struck the man. The family inside the Tundra stopped at the scene. Some occupants suffered injuries believed to include broken bones, and one juvenile had a chipped tooth and head pain. None were transported to the hospital.
The elderly man was pronounced deceased after being transported. Police said he has been identified, and investigators are working to notify next of kin.
The southbound mainlanes were shut down for the investigation but have since reopened. Investigators said they do not believe intoxication played a role. The circumstances that led to him being on the freeway remain under investigation.
