Suspect dies after initiating physical altercation with officer during traffic stop on Airline in Houston

HOUSTON, TX – A suspect was pronounced deceased after a struggle with a sergeant during a traffic stop in north Houston.

The incident occurred in the 5300 block of Airline near Tidwell.

According to the Houston Police Department, a sergeant and the suspect were traveling southbound on Airline when a traffic stop was conducted. The driver pulled into a parking lot and exited the vehicle before the sergeant approached.

Police said the sergeant attempted to detain the suspect, who resisted, initiating a physical altercation with the officer during the traffic stop. Both the sergeant and the suspect fell to the ground while continuing to fight, during which the sergeant’s weapon was discharged.

The suspect, described as a male in his 20s to 30s, ran from the scene but was located nearby with multiple gunshot wounds. First aid was provided before the suspect was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

HPD’s Internal Affairs, HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.

The sergeant sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover. No weapons have been found at this time.

Police said a white truck seen at the scene is believed to belong to a possible intoxicated driver who drove into the area. Field sobriety tests were being conducted, and the driver is not believed to be connected to the incident.
