HOUSTON, TX — Dr. Matthews and community activist Quanell X visited the Popeyes at 11820 Jones Road after a customer reported receiving chicken that appeared spoiled.

The customer said that when she originally returned to the restaurant, management told her the chicken smelled and looked rotten. She received a refund for the order.

However, during the visit, the same restaurant manager described the discoloration as bruising and said the location replaced its chicken and contacted its poultry provider.

Quanell X disputed that explanation, saying portions of the chicken appeared to contain mold or possible larvae. He questioned what safety measures had been implemented to prevent other customers from receiving similar food.

Dr. Matthews also called the condition of the chicken unacceptable and accused the restaurant of failing to protect customers.

Another customer said he had previously received a criminal trespass warning after a disagreement with management concerning service at the location.

The restaurant manager asked the group to leave the property and said police were on their way. Dr. Matthews and Quanell X had already left the location before Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived, and deputies found no wrongdoing.
