HOUSTON, TX – Dr. Matthews conducted a walkthrough at La Casita apartments, located at 313 Sunnyside Street, where multiple residents described ongoing issues inside their units.
During the walkthrough, residents pointed out conditions including roaches, rats, mold, flies, evidence of rats, air conditioning units not cooling properly, and birds inside a bathroom vent. Video shows issues inside bathrooms and kitchens, including what appeared to be ventilation problems in showers and visible pest activity.
Residents stated they are paying rent, with one individual saying units cost around $1,000 or more per month. Another resident described recent maintenance issues, including a toilet replacement and concerns about bacteria and mold exposure.
One resident said they have requested repairs multiple times, including for leaks and structural issues, but reported delays in response. Another tenant described broken windows, heat inside the unit, and bird activity within the structure.
During the walkthrough, it was stated that a disabled man experienced a fire inside his apartment and only recently had smoke detectors installed in the unit.
A resident who identified himself as a veteran and said he had been evicted after HUD stopped paying. The apartments allegedly decided to force him out despite knowing his case worker had found him a new place that was not quite ready for move in.
An office worker also ran out through a back door when Dr. Matthews entered the office. A manager later left when confronted by a resident who said they had reported an issue four times without a response.
Dr. Matthews questioned property management practices, including rent collection and maintenance response, and stated the conditions were unacceptable. She also referenced plans to escalate concerns to city officials.
