HOUSTON, TX – A Houston Police sergeant shot a suspect after being pinned by a vehicle in the 5000 block of Westheimer around 5:20 p.m. Saturday evening, according to HPD.
The incident began when officers working an extra job near the Galleria identified a vehicle believed to be connected to a previous crime. As they approached, the driver exited a private property and began traveling against traffic on Westheimer.
According to HPD, a sergeant approached the driver’s side, at which point he became pinned between the suspect’s vehicle and another object. The sergeant then discharged his weapon multiple times, striking the suspect in the torso.
The suspect, identified only as a Black male, continued across Westheimer before coming to a stop. Officers rendered medical aid on scene. Both the sergeant and the suspect were transported to local hospitals. The sergeant sustained non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect was also transported to the hospital but his condition is unknown at this time.
The sergeant is a 25-year veteran of HPD and will be placed on administrative duties in accordance with department policy.
The vehicle in question is believed to be involved in a previous jugging attempt, but it is not yet confirmed.
HPD’s Homicide Division, Internal Affairs, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are conducting the investigation. Body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days as per HPD policy.
No other individuals were injured in the incident. HPD is asking anyone with information or video footage to contact the Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.
Preliminary information indicates that an officer was struck by a vehicle during the incident and transported to the hospital. A suspect was also transported to the hospital.
The extent of injuries is unknown at this time.
