HOUSTON, TX – Two people were found deceased inside a basement wine cellar at a home in River Oaks after a reported hazardous environment involving dry ice.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on July 4 at a residence in the 3200 block of Avalon Place. Houston Police Department Central Patrol officers and the Houston Fire Department responded to the scene after receiving a call about two unresponsive adults.
Upon entering the home, firefighters located an adult male and an adult female deceased in the wine cellar.
Preliminary information indicates that dry ice had been stored in the confined space. As it melted, it likely released carbon dioxide, displacing oxygen and creating a hazardous environment.
Investigators believe the victims had gone down to check on supplies and were overcome by the gas.
The investigation is ongoing.
