Lyft driver found dead in ditch in Louisiana; suspect killed fleeing on Houston freeway

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – A man struck and killed while fleeing from a stolen vehicle near Beltway 8 and Wallisville Road was one of two suspects wanted in connection with the killing of a Lyft driver in Louisiana, according to Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory.

The homicide victim was identified as 62-year-old Lawanna J. Lewis of Lake Charles, a Lyft driver whose body was found shot to death in a ditch along Trousdale Road. She had been working as a Lyft driver when she was killed. A truck driver delivering to Phillips 66 discovered her body around 11 a.m.

Investigators determined Lewis had been giving two men, identified as Tristan Bush, 26, of Lafayette, and Ethan Bush of Boyce, a ride prior to her death. It is still unclear if the trip was booked through the Lyft platform.

At approximately 10 p.m., the Harris County Sheriff’s Office received information from Louisiana law enforcement about a stolen vehicle believed to be tied to the homicide. The vehicle was located in the Walmart parking lot near Wallisville Road and Beltway 8.

As a deputy approached, both men fled on foot. Ethan Bush ran onto the northbound lanes of Beltway 8, where he was struck by a passing vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene. Tristan Bush was located about two hours later hiding in a nearby backyard and was taken into custody.

Tristan Bush remains in the Harris County Jail charged with second-degree murder and is awaiting extradition to Louisiana. His bond has been set at $2.5 million.

Preliminary information initially indicated that the case was connected to a homicide investigation out of Jefferson Parish. It has since been confirmed that the investigation is linked to the killing of Lyft driver Lawanna J. Lewis in Calcasieu Parish.
