Mother charged with murder after 9-year-old daughter dies in hot car at Galena Park industrial site

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – A mother has been arrested and charged with murder following the July death of her nine-year-old daughter who was left inside a parked vehicle in Galena Park.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, on July 1, 2025, at approximately 2:06 p.m., Galena Park Police officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Mayo Shell Road after receiving a call about an unresponsive child in a vehicle. Officers arrived at approximately 2:18 p.m. and found the child unresponsive, with CPR in progress.

The child was transported by ambulance to LBJ Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Investigators determined the mother, identified as 36-year-old Gbemisola G. Akayinode, had left her daughter in a parked vehicle with the back windows partially down while she went to work at the location.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled the cause of death as hyperthermia and classified the manner of death as homicide.

On October 17, 2025, Homicide Detectives and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested Akayinode. She has been charged with Felony Murder and was transported to the Harris County Jail.
