Wrong-way driver killed after fiery head-on crash on I-10 near Lockwood

HOUSTON, TX — A wrong-way driver was pronounced deceased following a head-on crash on the East Freeway near Lockwood Drive, according to the Houston Police Department.

Police said the crash occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 heading toward downtown. Investigators determined that a sedan was traveling westbound legally when it was struck by a vehicle driving the wrong way at a high rate of speed.

Police said a prior call had reported a wrong-way driver near the Minute Maid area. Investigators believe the vehicle may have entered I-10 via an on-ramp and continued in the wrong direction before the collision.

Witnesses, including a roadway work crew on scene, reported that the wrong-way vehicle slammed into the sedan, erupted into debris and caught fire. The male driver of the wrong-way vehicle was trapped inside and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The female driver of the sedan, who was traveling the correct direction, suffered serious injuries. She was found unconscious and transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Police identified the wrong-way vehicle as an Acura NSX, a rear-engine sports car. Investigators said the vehicle was severely damaged, and identification of the driver may take time. The Medical Examiner’s Office responded due to the nature of the crash.

Police said toxicology testing will be conducted as part of the investigation. No license plate information was immediately available.

The crash scattered extensive debris and fluids across the roadway, prompting a prolonged closure. Police said cleanup efforts were expected to take several hours, and drivers were advised to seek alternate routes as crews worked to clear the scene.
