HOUSTON, TX – A 54-year-old man was critically injured after being beaten with a pistol during an attempted robbery on a sidewalk in southwest Houston.
The attack occurred around 9:45 p.m. in the 6100 block of Glenmont.
According to police, the victim was approached by a suspect believed to be in his late teens, possibly 17 to 18 years old, who was armed with a pistol. The suspect reportedly demanded the victim’s wallet as the victim attempted to flee on foot but was unable to get away.
Police said the suspect knocked the victim to the ground and repeatedly struck him in the face and head with the pistol. A witness reported hearing the suspect say, “give me your wallet” during the attack.
During the incident, the suspect discharged the firearm one time, though it is unclear if the shot was accidental or intended to scare the victim.
The victim sustained severe injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition but is expected to survive.
Police said the victim still had his wallet when officers reached him at the hospital, and it is not believed anything was taken.
The suspect fled on foot and entered what is believed to be a blue Honda Accord that was waiting nearby.
Detectives are working to identify and locate the suspect or suspects involved.
