Woman Charged with Intoxication Manslaughter in Fatal West Loop South Crash

HOUSTON, July 24, 2023 – Charges have been filed against a 28-year-old woman in connection with a fatal crash on West Loop South that occurred around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 22.

The suspect, identified as Daija Marche McElwee, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter by the 183rd State District Court.

The male victim, 48, whose identity is still pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was a passenger in a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. The truck had stopped on the shoulder of the ramp to the northbound Eastex Freeway (North U.S. Highway 59) so the passenger could change a flat tire when a white Ford Mustang struck the rear of the truck and the victim.

Upon arrival at the scene, Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim deceased. The female driver of the truck suffered minor injuries but declined to be transported to the hospital.

The driver of the Mustang, later identified as McElwee, was detained at the scene and was found to be impaired. McElwee was then arrested and subsequently charged in connection to the fatal crash.
