Walt Disney Elementary focuses on recovery after tornado as deadly storm claims four lives across the South

ALVIN, TX – Recovery efforts are underway at Walt Disney Elementary School in Brazoria County after a tornado caused significant damage to the campus during a devastating weekend storm that left four people dead across the South.

Located near Mustang Road off Highway 35, the school suffered severe roof damage when one of six confirmed tornadoes in Texas struck the area Saturday. The National Weather Service classified the tornado as an EF2, with sustained winds of at least 111 mph, making it one of the strongest storms in the region.

“While this news breaks our hearts, we are incredibly thankful that all children and staff were safe and not on campus during the storm,” district officials with Alvin ISD Education Foundation said in a post. “As we work toward recovery, we are asking for your support. Many of our educators have lost individual teaching materials that they’ve lovingly gathered over the years to inspire and educate their students.”

The storm system caused widespread destruction across multiple states, resulting in four fatalities. In Brazoria County, one person was killed during the tornado that damaged the school. In Mississippi, an 18-year-old woman was killed in Adams County when a tree fell on her home, and another fatality was reported in Lowndes County. In North Carolina, a man died in Iredell County after a tree fell on his vehicle along Landis Highway.

With dozens of tornadoes confirmed from Texas to the Carolinas, the storm system uprooted trees, damaged homes, and left thousands without power. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced the deployment of over 300 responders and 180 assets to assist with recovery efforts across the state.

Community members interested in supporting the recovery of Walt Disney Elementary School can contact the Alvin Independent School District for information on donations and volunteer opportunities.
