Houston police shoot suspect who opened fire on officers following crime spree

HOUSTON, TX – A suspect was shot by officers and taken into custody after opening fire on police following a crime spree that began with a vehicle theft and an aggravated robbery early Sunday morning.

The incident started around 3:00 a.m. when dispatch received a call regarding a stolen vehicle at the 9200 block of Richmond. According to police, three females reported their vehicle was stolen by a Black male, possibly in his 30s.

Twelve minutes later, the same suspect committed an aggravated robbery at a convenience store using a deadly weapon. Officers from the Houston Police Department’s Midwest and Northwest Divisions coordinated over radio communications to locate the suspect.

A few minutes later, a Northwest officer spotted the stolen vehicle and began following it. Other officers converged, leading them to the 8600 block of Eastern Commons, where the suspect exited the vehicle, ran through a courtyard, and opened fire on pursuing officers.

Officers returned fire, striking the suspect and taking him into custody. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation, as the shooting occurred in their jurisdiction. The Houston Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct separate investigations.

Five officers were involved in the incident, with service ranging from six months to three years. All officers have been placed on administrative duty per department policy.

Per department protocol, body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days.
