Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is investigating public school educators who allegedly posted or shared “reprehensible and inappropriate content” on social media regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

According to a letter from the TEA, several educators have made posts that are now being reviewed by the agency’s Educator Investigations Division to determine if they violate the Educators’ Code of Ethics.

The letter, issued by Commissioner of Education Mike Morath, stated that while freedom of speech is protected, it does not grant “carte blanche authority to celebrate or sow violence against those that share differing beliefs and perspectives.”

“Mr. Kirk was a father and a husband,” Morath wrote. “As a father and husband myself, and as someone devoted to the education of children, it is heartbreaking.”

The letter urged superintendents to report additional cases through the TEA’s Misconduct Reporting Portal and commended districts that had already taken disciplinary action. Morath emphasized that the comments do not reflect the values of the vast majority of Texas teachers.
