Memorial planned for a father of five who was fatally shot after stepping in to stop a man from attacking his own mother

HOUSTON, TX – A memorial is planned for Spencer Germany, a father of five who was fatally shot after intervening in an assault at a home in Houston’s Third Ward.

According to his family, the memorial will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Buffalo Run Park, 1122 Buffalo Run Park, in Missouri City.

Germany was shot at a home in the 3300 block of Anita Street. According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to the residence around 12:10 a.m. and found a male victim inside suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Family members said Germany was visiting a friend when he saw Rogers McFarland allegedly strangling his own elderly mother. Germany intervened and pulled McFarland away. The family said McFarland left the home for several hours before returning and shooting Germany, then fleeing on foot.

Witnesses told police that McFarland entered the home, shot the victim, and fled. Officers patrolling the area later located and detained McFarland without incident. After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, detectives charged McFarland with murder in the 176th Criminal District Court.

McFarland remains in the Harris County Jail on a $750,000 bond.
