HOUSTON, Texas — A man was arrested after an hourslong SWAT response Thursday evening following a family disturbance in southwest Houston in which police said he cut his brother in the throat with a knife.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded around 7:20 p.m. to the 7700 block of Hornwood for a reported family disturbance.
Police said the suspect, believed to be in his late 30s, got into an argument with family members before pulling out two knives and cutting his brother, who is in his late 40s, in the throat. Authorities said the victim’s injuries were not believed to be severe, and family members called 911.
When patrol officers arrived, they found the suspect outside armed with a knife. Police said he refused to surrender before running back inside the home.
The Patrol Support Team secured the scene while the Houston Police Department SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team responded. Negotiators attempted to convince the suspect to surrender, but he refused.
During the standoff, officers breached a window and sent a drone into the home, confirming the suspect was alive inside. A robotic dog was also deployed, but police said the suspect still refused to come out.
After CS gas was deployed, the suspect exited the home uninjured and was taken into custody by SWAT officers.
Police said the suspect was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault against a family member. One knife was recovered at the scene.
Investigators said no hostages were inside the home. The residence is believed to be occupied by the suspect, his brother, his brother’s wife, and two children, including a teenager and a child under the age of 10.
The injured brother was treated for his injuries and is not believed to have been transported to a hospital.
The Houston Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
