HOUSTON, TX – A woman was struck and killed after running across the Gulf Freeway while officers attempted to move her away from traffic.

Houston Police Department Sgt. Derrick Hall said officers were dispatched around 8 p.m. after a caller reported seeing a woman wearing little clothing running along the service road and expressed concern that she might enter the freeway.

An officer initially drove westbound but did not see the woman. After making a U-turn and traveling eastbound, the officer spotted her along the service road in the 10000 block of the Gulf Freeway.

The officer pulled into a nearby parking lot and attempted to get the woman out of the roadway. As the officer began exiting his vehicle, the woman ran across the service road and the eastbound freeway lanes.

She continued across the HOV lanes before entering the westbound lanes, where a pickup truck traveling at freeway speed struck her. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police found no indication that the pickup truck driver was impaired. Investigators said the driver was not connected to the initial call.

The woman had not been identified. The medical examiner was working to confirm her identity and notify her family.

Detectives with HPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit collected photographs and measurements and planned to search nearby businesses for surveillance video.
