Firefighters rescue elderly man from burning home in south Houston

HOUSTON, TX – Firefighters rescued an elderly man from a burning home on the south side of Houston Monday night after receiving reports that he was trapped inside.

According to the Houston Fire Department, Engine 35 was first on scene and encountered heavy fire and smoke venting from the home. A man at the location told firefighters his father was still inside. A 360-degree survey was conducted, and a handline was pulled to initiate fire control.

Engine 55 and Ladder 26 arrived shortly after and assisted with the primary search. Crews located the elderly man in a bedroom and successfully rescued him. He was treated at the scene and transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital. His condition has not been released.

Wind conditions contributed to the intensity of the fire. Firefighters used multiple interior attack lines to contain and extinguish the blaze. Additional search chains confirmed no other victims were inside.

Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. It is not yet known whether the cold weather or space heaters played a role.

Fire officials reminded residents to use caution when heating their homes—keeping space heaters clear of flammable items, avoiding use of ovens or stovetops for warmth, and ensuring chimneys are clean if using fireplaces.
