PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Dr. Matthews held a press conference Thursday in Port Arthur, where she renewed her criticism of self-described activist David Jones, repeated previous allegations against him, and challenged him to respond publicly.
Standing outside a residence associated with Jones, Dr. Matthews accused him of frequently attacking public officials and community members on social media while avoiding face-to-face confrontations. She repeatedly referred to Jones as a “keyboard gangster” and said she intended to continue confronting him publicly.
During the press conference, Jones briefly opened the door, appeared to take a photograph of those gathered, and then returned inside without making a public statement.
Dr. Matthews said she notified the Port Arthur Police Department, the Port Arthur police chief, and the district attorney before holding the press conference, saying she wanted authorities to be aware of the conference and emphasizing what she described as her constitutional right to assemble.
Throughout the conference, Dr. Matthews repeated previous allegations involving what she has described as a “care package” that she said was connected to accusations involving Jones’ interactions with homeless individuals in Houston. She also repeated allegations accusing Jones of sexual misconduct and indecent exposure involving another individual. Those allegations have not resulted in any publicly announced criminal charges against Jones.
Dr. Matthews also criticized what she described as conditions visible outside the residence, alleging there was accumulated trash, standing water, and raw sewage. She argued that someone who publicly criticizes others should first address those issues.
A community member who spoke during the press conference also criticized Jones, alleging he routinely attacks local elected officials and residents online while avoiding direct confrontations. The speaker claimed that Jones becomes confrontational only when police officers and cameras are present.
The press conference is the latest development in an ongoing public dispute between Dr. Matthews and Jones, who have repeatedly criticized one another over political and community issues in Port Arthur.
Jones did not publicly respond to the allegations during the press conference beyond briefly opening the door, appearing to photograph those gathered before going back inside.
