HOUSTON — Three people were wounded when a man reportedly opened fire on moving vehicles before Houston police officers and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper shot him in the 6300 block of North Wayside Drive.

According to Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Yasir Bashir, authorities received multiple calls at approximately 11:02 a.m. regarding a man firing an automatic weapon at moving vehicles.

Officers arrived within minutes, located the man and ordered him to drop the weapon. Three HPD officers and one DPS trooper then discharged their weapons, striking him multiple times.

The man was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. His condition was not released.

Investigators determined three vehicles were struck by gunfire before officers arrived. Three people inside two of the vehicles were wounded, including a mother and daughter who drove to a nearby fire station for help. All three were reported in stable condition. No one inside the third vehicle was injured.

No officers or troopers were injured.

HPD, the district attorney’s office and the Texas Rangers are conducting parallel investigations. Body-camera footage is expected to be released within 30 days.

A good Samaritan, David Davis, who was working at Chicken Plus, warned others about the shooter and told them to stay away from the area and was commended by Chief Diaz.
