Military-style vehicle leads police on multi-agency pursuit across Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – A 53-year-old man is in custody after allegedly fleeing from law enforcement in a military-style tractor-trailer, triggering a multi-agency pursuit across Harris County and Houston.

The incident began around 9:47 p.m. on January 4, when an off-duty Precinct 4 Constable witnessed a hit-and-run crash with injuries. The deputy quickly located the suspect vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop, prompting a pursuit.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies deployed spike strips several times during the pursuit, which proved ineffective. At one point on Beltway 8 near Garrett, a deputy discharged his firearm, but the vehicle continued.

The chase proceeded into east Houston, eventually reaching I-10 and Waco, then north to the Eastex Freeway. The Texas Department of Public Safety joined the pursuit and also discharged their weapons in an effort to stop the vehicle. Despite multiple attempts, the vehicle continued until coming to a stop near U.S. 59 and Little York.

Deputies made contact with the driver, but he refused to comply. The HCSO SWAT team deployed gas, which ultimately led to the suspect’s surrender. No injuries were reported, and the suspect was not struck by gunfire.

According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office officials, the suspect reportedly struck approximately 10 vehicles prior to the pursuit. He now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and evading arrest. Investigators say he attempted to ram several patrol units during the incident.

One civilian was treated by EMS at the initial crash scene. No deputies or civilians were injured during the pursuit.

The suspect vehicle bore Texas plates but no confirmed military registration. Investigators said it appeared to be painted in a military-style camouflage pattern but have not confirmed if it was an official military vehicle.

Agencies assisting in the response included the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Precinct 4 and Precinct 7 Constable’s Offices, Texas DPS, Houston Police Department, and Houston Fire Department. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case.
