Dr. Matthews, others raise concerns about Harris County courtroom access

HOUSTON, TX – Dr. Matthews spoke outside Harris County Court 507 regarding ongoing protective order proceedings involving Judge Diane Curvey and her husband, Derrick.

Standing outside the courtroom, Dr. Matthews said she attempted to attend the hearing as a court watcher but was told she would need to be on a witness list to enter. She questioned why she was not permitted to attend and raised concerns about courtroom access.

Dr. Matthews also criticized a temporary protective order connected to the case. During her remarks, she questioned whether a judge should sign a temporary protective order involving an individual who had previously filed a judicial complaint. She alleged the protective order was improper and stated that an additional judicial complaint would be filed.

In a public statement released after the hearing, Dr. Matthews said her name, along with the names of several other individuals, appeared on a witness list connected to the proceeding. She questioned when the list was prepared, when it was disclosed, and whether it was used to prevent members of the public from observing the hearing.

Dr. Matthews said she believes court proceedings should remain open to public observation unless there is a lawful reason to restrict access. She also called for answers regarding why certain individuals were placed on the witness list, whether those individuals were expected to testify, and whether the list was disclosed in a timely manner.

Kyle French raised similar concerns in a separate video. French stated that his name had been placed on the witness list for a bill of review proceeding involving a protective order against Judge Curvey’s husband. He said he had no personal knowledge of the matters being litigated and had not witnessed any alleged family violence or been involved in disputes between the parties.

French alleged that his inclusion on the witness list prevented him from entering the courtroom because witnesses are generally required to remain outside while testimony is being presented. He further accused Judge Curvey of improperly involving him in court proceedings and stated that he intends to pursue additional complaints related to the matter.

Both Matthews and French questioned whether the witness list was used to limit public observation of the proceeding.
