Dr. Matthews warns that future payments to Aubrey Taylor will face public scrutiny

HOUSTON – Dr. Matthews issued a public notice Friday warning that future campaign payments to Aubrey R. Taylor Communications by public officials and political candidates will be highlighted and discussed publicly as part of her ongoing transparency efforts.

According to Dr. Matthews, public campaign finance records show that Harris County District Judge Damiane “Dianne” Curvey, State Rep. Ronald Reynolds and Germaine Tanner previously paid Aubrey R. Taylor Communications for campaign-related services.

Dr. Matthews said she believes those candidates may not have been aware of information that has since become part of the public discussion regarding Taylor’s criminal history and what she described as concerns about his business practices. She characterized that statement as her opinion based on the timing of the reported campaign expenditures.

Dr. Matthews also referenced former Harris County District Clerk Chris Daniel, who is running for Harris County Clerk. Daniel has previously stated that he paid Aubrey R. Taylor Communications for advertising services that he said were not provided as expected.

Dr. Matthews said that, going forward, any public official or political candidate who hires or financially supports Aubrey R. Taylor Communications should expect those campaign expenditures, as reflected in public campaign finance reports, to be publicly highlighted and discussed.

“We believe voters have the right to know where campaign dollars are being spent and to make their own informed decisions,” Dr. Matthews said in the statement.

Dr. Matthews concluded the notice by stating, “Transparency isn’t personal. It’s accountability.”
