HOUSTON, TX — Dr. Matthews visited Parkway Plaza Apartments at 130 W. Parker Road after residents contacted her regarding concerns about conditions at the complex. During the visit, residents alleged ongoing issues with mold, rodents, roaches, appliance failures, and property maintenance.
While walking the property, Dr. Matthews observed what she described as deteriorating conditions, including a swimming pool residents compared to a swamp, exposed utility cables, and areas of the complex showing signs of disrepair.
Residents invited Dr. Matthews into an apartment where they pointed to rodent droppings, roaches, flies, and gnats. One tenant said rats had entered the stove, making it unusable and forcing the family to prepare meals outside. The resident also reported problems with a refrigerator that was not properly cooling food.
Multiple residents alleged mold was present inside their units and claimed maintenance crews had painted over affected areas rather than removing the source of the problem. During the visit, Dr. Matthews reported a noticeable odor consistent with mold inside one apartment.
The residents said the apartment includes a pregnant woman, a young child, and family members with medical conditions. They expressed concerns about the potential impact the alleged conditions could have on their health and well-being.
Additional concerns raised during the visit included alleged mail theft, unsecured mailboxes, and complaints that maintenance requests had not been adequately addressed.
Dr. Matthews said she intends to contact city officials and request inspections of the property. The allegations made by residents have not been independently verified, and management of Parkway Plaza Apartments had not publicly responded to the claims at the time of publication.
