Child not wearing seat belt ejected, killed in crash involving Harris County Deputy

HOUSTON, TX – A child who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected and killed when a pickup collided with a marked Harris County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, the crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. on T.C. Jester near Tomlinson Trail Drive.

A marked sheriff’s vehicle was traveling southbound on T.C. Jester when a northbound Toyota pickup turned westbound across its path. The collision sent the sheriff’s vehicle into a brick subdivision entrance. The pickup rotated and stopped facing southbound on T.C. Jester.

The child, who was younger than 12, was riding in the pickup’s front passenger seat without a seat belt and was ejected. The deputy performed CPR on the child, which continued until the child arrived at a hospital. The child was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Investigators said the pickup driver, described as a Hispanic man in his 50s or 60s, showed signs of intoxication. Authorities are seeking a warrant for a blood sample. The driver could face an intoxication manslaughter charge if investigators determine he was intoxicated.

The deputy is assigned to the Crisis Intervention Response Team and had a clinician riding in the passenger seat. Both suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital. They were not responding to a call when the crash occurred.

Investigators found no indication that speed contributed to the crash. They plan to download data from both vehicles and review available video.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division are investigating.
