Update: The Officer has been identified as Deputy Constable Omar Ursin, a Harris County Precinct 3 Constable. A Houston Uber driver is shaken after she had a man get out of his vehicle and pointed an assault rifle toward her for apparently no reason. Four people are dead after a suspect set a fire to a house in southwest Houston early Sunday morning at 5742 Holly Street near the 8000 block of Dunlap Street. https://www.youtube.com/embed/UfJ8uMhq_S0 Police Chief Troy Finner of the Houston Police Department stated in a press briefing that four individuals are dead after a suspect set a fire to a "multiple-room renting facility". According to Chief Finner, the calls started to come in at 1:07 a.m. to both the Houston Fire Department (HFD) and the Houston Police Department (HPD). According to the Houston Police Department, at least one person is dead after a vehicle that was on the I-45 southbound connector ramp to Beltway 8 East in north Houston went through the guard rail and landed on Beltway 8 below. https://twitter.com/houstonpolice/status/1563398902505558016 According to Lt. Buttitta of the Houston Police Department, the vehicle, a black Mercedes was seen traveling southbound on I-45 at a high rate of speed before taking the I-45 south exit to Beltway 8 East in north Houston. Mayor Turner: “Our children deserve better”, after federal judge blocks law prohibiting handguns for young adults

In a court ruling today, a federal judge in Texas signed an order that effectively blocks a law that was enacted after the Uvalde massacre. The law made it a crime for young adults between 18 and 20 years old from carrying handguns for self-defense outside of their homes. In his order, United States District Judge, Mark Pittman ruled that it prohibiting young adults that are between the ages of 18 and 20 years old goes against the Second Amendment. Hertz is being sued again after customers were wrongly accused of stealing cars

A lawsuit has been filed in Florida after several customers were reported to police for stealing cars from Hertz. This caused the police to not only pull them over, but in some cases, the customers were held at gunpoint, arrested, and charged with grand theft auto. Similar cases have been filed across the country over the last few years. According to the lawsuit, filed in Miami's 11th Judicial Circuit, on August 15, 2022, this is not a new problem and has been happening for years and accuses the car rental company of putting profits first, and their customer's liberty and freedom last by ignoring policies they enacted to deal with "overdue" and "lost inventory" case. Humble ISD sent out an e-mail to parents this morning advising them that both Humble Middle School and Whispering Pines Elementary were placed in "Secure the Perimeter Status" Thursday morning. This was triggered by a report of a bullet entering a nearby resident's home. From Humble ISD: "At approximately 9:55 a.m., HMS and WPE campuses were placed on Secure the Perimeter status out of an abundance of caution. A homeowner who lives in close proximity to Humble Middle School reported sounds of gunfire and that a round entered his home, grazing the refrigerator. Kenneth A. Ward, of Houston, TX has been arrested in connection with a road rage incident that happened on August 3, 2022 for a felony charge of aggravated assault. Kenneth Ward (Credit: Haris County Precinct 1) The case, which has been filed in Harris County District Court (Case No. 178392901010), gives us a bit more info about what led up to the chase. According to court documents, the incident started at about 8:25 p.m. when the driver of the Mini-Cooper turned onto Morrison Street from White Oak Drive in the heights. The driver stated that this is when he noticed a black truck, which was traveling at a high rate of speed. University of Chicago/AP-NORC Poll: 4 out of 10 Americans fear they will be a victim of gun violence in the next five years

According to a recent poll conducted by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 4 out of 10 Americans believe they will become a victim of gun violence in the next five years. The poll, which was conducted at the end of July, also found that Black Americans and Hispanic Americans are twice as likely to have experienced gun violence themselves or know someone that has already experienced gun violence. Most Americans surveyed in the poll (71%) all agree that gun laws should be somewhat stricter, with 59%, or nearly 6 out of 10 supporting a ban on semi-automatic weapons.
