Family, Activists Rally at Brazoria County Courthouse Seeking Justice for John Mendoza

ANGLETON, Texas — Family members, community activists and supporters gathered outside the Brazoria County Courthouse demanding answers and accountability in the shooting death of 18-year-old John Gabriel Mendoza, who was fatally shot by a Brazoria County sheriff’s deputy following a pursuit in Lake Jackson.

Protesters repeatedly chanted “Justice for John,” “Release the video now,” and “This was not an accident,” while calling for the release of body camera and other video evidence related to the shooting.

Mendoza’s father thanked supporters and described his son as a Dean’s List student who played football since childhood. He called for transparency, integrity and justice, saying his family has not received answers about the shooting.

Several family members with law enforcement backgrounds also addressed the crowd. Mendoza’s aunt, who said she served more than 21 years as a detective and investigator, questioned the deputy’s actions and called for accountability from the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, prosecutors and the grand jury process.

Civil rights activist Quanell X called for the release of video evidence and urged the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the case rather than relying solely on the Texas Rangers investigation.

Dr. Matthews also spoke during the rally, criticizing the deputy’s actions and calling for criminal charges if investigators determine wrongdoing occurred. She told the family they had community support and said, “Wearing a badge is not a license to kill.”

Additional speakers, including community leaders and supporters, expressed concerns about transparency, accountability and the handling of the investigation.

The demonstration concluded with organizers urging supporters to remain peaceful, obey traffic laws and continue focusing on justice for Mendoza as the investigation moves forward.
