HOUSTON, Texas – Dr. Matthews visited Crofton Place Apartments near Homestead Road and Tidwell Road after residents raised concerns about conditions at the complex, alleging multiple health and safety issues, including mold, water leaks, rodent infestations, structural damage, sewage issues and a possible gas leak.
During the visit, tenants showed conditions they said have persisted for years, including soft flooring, visible mold accumulation, leaking water, roach activity, rodent droppings and damaged walls. One resident said he had lived at the complex for about three years and claimed maintenance concerns had not been adequately addressed.
Residents also pointed to what they described as structural deterioration inside one apartment, including flooring they believed could eventually collapse due to water damage. During the walkthrough, a security guard accompanying Dr. Matthews who also performs home repair work observed that portions of the flooring appeared unusually soft and suggested the damage could be consistent with termite-related deterioration.
Outside the building, residents identified areas they said contained rodent activity and sewage overflow. During the visit, a strong odor believed to be natural gas was detected near a gas line and boiler area.
The Houston Fire Department responded to the complex after concerns about a possible gas leak were reported. Firefighters evaluated the area and requested assistance from CenterPoint Energy.
During the visit, CenterPoint Energy crews arrived at the apartment complex to investigate the reported gas leak after being dispatched by the Houston Fire Department.
Residents further alleged ongoing issues with mold exposure, leaks, pest infestations and deteriorating living conditions throughout the property. One tenant said he pays approximately $950 per month in rent and claimed repeated maintenance requests had not resulted in repairs.
The resident also stated he is currently undergoing treatment for cancer and expressed concern that the conditions inside the apartment could negatively impact his health.
Dr. Matthews also paid a visit to the leasing office along with one resident to discuss the concerns. During the visit, they spoke with a representative identified as “Mr. Steve,” who said he previously managed the property and is currently assisting the ownership group. The representative stated there had been recent management changes and indicated he would review the concerns raised by residents.
Dr. Matthews said she plans to notify Houston city officials, including City Council members and other departments, and seek inspections of the property. Calls were also made for city code enforcement to review the conditions documented during the visit.
Additional residents who spoke during the visit alleged maintenance requests had gone unanswered and said they were concerned about the impact of the conditions on families and children living at the complex.
